What are the side effects of prolonged bullying?

my best freind was bullied for six years in school. he was made fun of and beaten by the students. the teachers also made fun of him. but at college he made many close and casuall freinds and had four not so seriouse girl freinds. but he is becoming very minupulative, hurtfull and selfish..he likes to make me feel bad about myself..is this projection from the bullying?
