The holographic Universe and Aliens?

Something I would like to know is- if the Universe is in fact a hologram and we project our own reality- and apparently have the ability to alter this reality-then would aliens not just be another projection? Would they actually be 'real'? We talk about a projected reality but then talk about aliens as though they are not part of that projection. I'm not sure if I have explained this very well, hopefully someone will understand what I am trying to say! I can't quite get my head around that one.
