How can an individual help to save endangered species?

If diversity leads to resilience which allows a system to accept change and keep from collapsing, how do I go about helping to save a habitat in my native state? Are there groups one can volunteer with? Are they private or governmental? Can you give me an idea on how to find groups I could partner with to help save habitats of species? That is, beyond just giving money.
